Hi, I’m Nadia.
Just one of the many Singaporeans living in Perth. One of the many food-obsessed Singaporeans, that is.
We can’t help it. Singapore is a melting pot of cultures and most of us grew up in the close proximity of HDB flats. The aromas of different cuisines would waft through the corridors. If you were friendly enough with your neighbours, you’d visit each other’s homes during your respective cultural holidays and partake in the best feasts. One that nourishes not just the body but the soul.
In addition to this, as a world famous port city, global influences were regularly seen in our shores not just in terms of products on our shelves, but even on our tv screens. I grew up watching both British and American shows and consequently discovered the joys of a gooey S’mores at a young age.
So yea, food is my jam. As I get older, I crave the tastes of nostalgia and love spotlighting food that either endemic or inspired by the South East Asian region.
I also love discovering and supporting local businesses. Western Australia is blessed with abundant quality produce and artisans who make killer products from said produce. Leave me unattended at a local farmers’ market and I’ll quite likely spend my entire paycheck in one morning.
But my love of local isn’t just limited to food.
I love supporting local artists when I can. Fringe is one of my favourite times of year and I am lucky to be able to cover more Fringe shows than most, thanks to my work as Editor in Chief at Perth Happenings. So even if I have not personally watched and reviewed a show, through the many hours of proofreading and polishing reviews, I usually have a good sense of what’s the hot ticket at Fringe.
It’s a very colourful life and I am so grateful for it. I hope you’ll check in on my crazy journey, because there are so many stories I want to tell. I just need the time to do it all!
